This is a translation of my recently deceased granddad’s poem “Et Dieu Vint” (and God came) from french to english, which he wrote while in jail for activism against Tito’s regime in Croatia.
English
In front of my overwhelming gaze,
in the penumbra, alone
on my bathroom table
crawled an ant.
Calm
and sure of herself, agile
like a flea
and full of weightless joy
she discovered in a table hinge
a crumb of bread.
And in my soul
was born:
a brand new thought
surged from where there was only mourning:
the most beautiful moments
are hidden
from the sun’s light. There is no
misery
in which the patience
of an ant
will not make the spark
that casts light upon the heart
in suffering.
French
Devant mon regard accablé,
dans la pénombre, seul
sur la petite table de bagnard
vint une fourmi.
Calme
et sûre d’elle, agile
comme une puce
et pleine d’une joie légeère,
elle découvrit dans une fissure
une miete de pain.
Et dans mon âme
se fit le jour:
une pensée toute neuve
surgit là où tout fut le deuil:
les plus beaux instants
ne sont pas éclairés
par la soleil. Il n’y a pas
de misére
dans laquelle la patience
d’une fourmi
ne trouvera pas une étincelle
pur éclairer le coeur
endolori.
